A Natural Fit: Smet staircases in Scandinavia
Last year, we completed our very first project in Denmark, an exciting milestone for Smet Staircases.
Thanks to a shared appreciation for quality, honest design, careful detailing and a straightforward way of working we enjoyed a seamless partnership with our new client. The result was a staircase that fulfilled the architectural ambition of the project and left behind a very happy client.
The experience confirmed something we had suspected for a long time: our approach is a natural fit for the Scandinavian market.
The Project that Started It All
For this Copenhagen project, Smet was approached by the client's project manager, who is based in London. Unable to find a supplier in Denmark capable of delivering the desired design, the team expanded its search abroad.
The design featured a fully curved staircase with and exceptionally slim waistline and a free-standing top section. Realising this vision required complex structural engineering and the integration of a bespoke hanging system developed by the project manager. It was an ambitious project that demanded close collaboration, precision engineering and meticulous craftsmanship from start to finish, but ultimately became the focal point of the home.
We worked on this project with Principal Designer Adam Lund, who oversaw the whole project, specifically the staircase and its steel hanging structure. The main contractor was Holst + Lundgren and technical drawings and 3D drawings were provided by JAH Arkitekter ApS .
Growing our Scandinavian Presence
Building on that success, we are pleased to share that we have secured a second project in Copenhagen through our connection with Holst + Lundgren. Moreover, we have also sold our first project in Sweden. While the UK remains our core market, these projects represent the beginning of what is gradually becoming a Scandinavian hub.
Why Scandinavia?
There is perhaps no better place to start than Copenhagen. Renowned for its architecture, design culture and exceptional quality of life, it is also one of Scandinavia's wealthiest cities and a growing hub for high-end residential development.
Beyond Denmark, the wider Scandinavian region also offers exciting opportunities. Sweden has the largest construction market in Scandinavia, while Norway is currently its fastest growing.
A Shared Design Philosophy
What stands out most is the Scandinavian interpretation of luxury. It is defined by natural materials, clean lines, exceptional joinery and timeless craftsmanship. It is an approach that feels remarkably familiar to us.
The Scandinavian design culture values many of the same things we do: thoughtful design, honest materials and quality. These values resonate strongly with our own philosophy: creating staircases that are not only functional but become integral architectural features within the spaces they inhabit.
