Project Spotlight: Nine Elms Duplex Penthouses
This Nine Elms project features three duplex penthouses, developed by London Square Developments. The project, which is located right next to the sky pool at Embassy Gardens, has some of the best views in London. We worked alongside London Square and Suna Interior Design, who approached us to create a staircase that would become a defining feature that allowed the incredible views to be celebrated throughout.
Shaping the Vision
Initially, three different design options were developed with varying specifications and budgets. The highest specification was ultimately selected. This allows for the staircase to be a true statement piece and a flagship element for London Square’s high‑end residential offering following the Abu Dhabi-based Aldar Properties takeover.
Made for the View
This design suited the penthouses particularly well. The bedrooms are located on the lower level and the main living spaces upstairs. As a result, the staircase naturally leads residents toward the panoramic views of the Thames, St Paul’s, the London Eye, Big Ben, and other London landmarks. To enhance this sense of openness, the area beneath the staircase was intentionally left free of any storage or closets. Leaving that area free avoids the sense of a narrow hallway and allows the staircase to take its place as a central visual feature.
Structural Challenges
The engineering work behind this design required careful attention. The combination of the apartment configuration and the stringerless block stair meant that achieving rigidity was essential. Because the existing wall was not originally built to support this type of stair, additional engineering measures were needed to prevent any movement or bounce.
Details that Count
A standout detail is the balustrade, with spindles arranged in sets of three. This subtle grouping adds rhythm and a clean, modern character to the stair. To ensure stability while keeping a light visual appearance, a metal post was concealed inside the timber starting post, providing the hidden strength the design required.
All three staircases stand completed in their respective homes. Two of the penthouses have already been occupied, while one remains available—so there is still a chance to claim a London penthouse with a signature Smet staircase at its heart.
