Riverside Grandeur: A Staircase in a Merged House
Along the riverbank, this Putney townhouse is the result of merging two elegant homes into one. Designed by TW10 architects and Micheal Veal, the property has at its heart a grand staircase focalpoint that unites the spaces. This spacious hallway, is a dream for any staircase contractor and we are delighted to share the story of how this staircase made waves in the design.
The Property
This property, originally two townhouses, has been remodelled by Roxburgh Construction. This incredible property has a garden overlooking the Thames and sits near the heart of Putney, making it an excellent location to live. With TW10 architects and Michael Veal design for the interiors, the house became a calming place that showcases the Clients pop art collection. But the real showstopper, is of course the gorgeous feature staircase that anchors the house.
The Space
After merging the two dwellings and combining both original entryways into one, the central hallway became a space of double width. This allows for light to stream through the space. With its grand feel, there was ample room for a feature staircase and because this was a CDP contract, we were able to further develop the design along the way.
The Design
From the get-go, the design had not yet been finalised. The only sure thing was there was to be ligth shining from balustrade onto the treads. The original design concep included a bronze L-profile on top of the stringer, for a slim-line design. However, with a curved staircase, that was not easy to achieve. We proposed 2 ideas, one with a fully metal balustrade with a baserail including the LED lighting, or a wooden baserail on top of the stringer, with a channel for the light strip. In the end, the second option was chosen. We also wanted to minimise the build-up of the staircase, so we allowed for a recessed detail on the plastered underside. Further, we allowed for a continuous handrail and closed stringer, to have a nice flow all the way up to the third floor.
The End Result
This incredible staircase runs over three floors, and includes the four stone clad steps down to the main living area on ground floor. The upper flights were finished with a luxurious carpet, the ground floor flight has dark stained oak treads. The balustrade and baserail were finished in a hand applied bronze finish. The teardrop chandelier is not yet installed, but will trickle down all floors central in the void.
This project was smooth sailing. We enjoyed working with all parties envolved and are incredibly proud of the end result. From merging two beautiful homes to seeing the grand staircase come to life, every step of the journey was exciting and rewarding. This property is a home that truly feels welcoming, full of personality, and made for living.
